Install and first start

The demo is not signed by Apple or Microsoft (yet), so your system warns you on the first start. That's normal for small projects and only needed once. After that, the game starts without asking, even after updates.

Windows

  1. Right-click the zip → “Extract All…” into a folder of its own (don't start the game straight from the zip).
  2. Start Battleground.exe.
  3. Windows SmartScreen says “Windows protected your PC”: click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.

Keep the folder writable (not under “Program Files”), so the game can update itself.

macOS

  1. Unzip with a double-click (Safari often does this for you) and drag Banners & Bones.app into your Applications folder. Don't start it from “Downloads”, or updates won't work.
  2. Double-click Banners & Bones. macOS says it can't verify the app: click “Done” (not “Move to Trash”).
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down. Next to “Banners & Bones was blocked”, click “Open Anyway” and confirm with your password or Touch ID.
  4. Confirm the next window with “Open”.

macOS 14: instead of steps 3 and 4, right-click the app → “Open” → “Open”.

Linux

  1. Unzip.
  2. If needed, make it executable: chmod +x Battleground.x86_64
  3. Start ./Battleground.x86_64.

Needs a current graphics driver with Vulkan.

Updates and online play

Automatic updates

On every start, the game checks this website for a newer version. If there is one, it downloads it, checks the file and restarts in the new version. So you only download once.

If that fails (for example without write access to the game folder), the game tells you, and you get the new version here.

Against real players

When you press “Ready”, the game sends your build phase to the server. The server checks it, stores your settlement as a ghost for other players and finds you an opponent with a similar record. Without a connection, you play offline against your own ghosts and bots.
